Beth Gorczyca Ryan joined The State Journal staff in January 2003 after working for three years as an enterprise/investigative reporter with The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington.
A native of Kent, Ohio, Ryan has worked as a reporter in three states, covering education, police and courts and government. As The State Journal's senior staff writer, Ryan is responsible for writing in-depth and analysis stories on issues that are critical to the state and its economic health.
She was one of the lead writers of the groundbreaking workers' compensation series, "Broke and Broken." She also was the lead writer on "What Now, West Virginia?" The year-long series investigated the biggest challenges facing West Virginia and what steps can be taken now to improve both the state's economy and residents' quality of life.
Ryan has won state and national awards during her career, including the James Batten Award for civic journalism, a National Press Club award and a first-place award from the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors.
Ryan lives in Charleston.
