Legal action was taken against Wal-Mart following a 2002 accident.

A 58-year-old Lincoln County resident has been awarded $1.8 million in a lawsuit stemming from a May 2002 accident.

Joyce Burnside filed a federal lawsuit against Wal-Mart after the blade of a defective riding mower she purchased there failed to stop after she jumped off. The blade chopped off all but her thumb and forefinger, while cutting her elbow and crushing the bone.

Burnside jumped off the mower when it seemed to be toppling over. The blades of the Murray mower should have stopped within five seconds after Burnside jumped from the seat. The mower tumbled 30 feet down a slope following Burnside.

Murray, the lawnmower's manufacturer, had filed for bankruptcy and gone out of business, but Wal-Mart, which sold the riding mower to Burnside, continued to sell the defective product.

Burnside went through 18 operations and several bouts of infection. She plans to have an addition to her house built and use the remaining money to help get things -- such as mowing her grass -- done by others.
