Senator third in line for the presidency behind the vice president, speaker of the House.

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., has been appointed president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate. Byrd will be third in line for the presidency behind the vice president and the speaker of the House.
Byrd will take over the position in January, when the new Congress is sworn in.
This is the third time Byrd has served as President Pro Tempore.
