A Mercer County man is accused of shooting his wife, who is a school teacher.

Story by Steve Ring

BLUEWELL -- A Mercer County man is in jail, accused of pulling a gun on his wife and firing it.

Investigators say Raymond Powell, 48, shot his wife early Monday morning at their home in the Route 20 area near Bluewell.

Deputies say after the shooting, Karen Powell, 51, and her elderly mother left the house and went through the neighborhood, trying to get help. Eventually, a neighbor answered the door.

Deputies say when they got there, Raymond Powell came out of the house and surrendered.

He faces numerous charges, including malicious assault.

Karen Powell had to be flown to Charleston Area Medical Center. She was listed as under evaluation early Wednesday morning.

Deputies say it appears to be a domestic situation that turned violent.

Karen Powell is a school teacher. But there is no word on where she teaches.
