Sexual assault allegedly took place on an FFA retreat.

ELKINS -- State Police have arrested an Elkins High School teacher.

James Beatty, 28, is accused of sexually assaulting a student.

The criminal complaint said the incident happened on a school-sponsored Future Farmers of America retreat at Cass Scenic Railroad in Pocahontas County.

The assault is being classified as "forcible".

The report says since the incident, Beatty has tried to kiss the girl he allegedly assaulted six or seven times in school.

The girl reported the incident to the police.

Beatty teaches animal sciences at Elkins High School.

Randolph County school officials say they are conducting their own investigation into the alleged incidents.

Beatty was the West Virginia Association of Agricultural Educators' Outstanding Young Teacher in 2005 and 2006 and a 2006 recipient of the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award.

He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
