The Mountain State also has 558 homes worth more than $1 million, according to new Census Bureau data.
Compared to the rest of the nation, housing in West Virginia is a bargain.
The Mountain State had the lowest median home price in the nation in 2003, according to data released by the Census Bureau on Tuesday.
Half of the homes in the state are worth more than $78,201 and half are worth less. That price is roughly half of the national median of $139,759, and a fraction of the $316,597 median in California.
But while there are plenty of inexpensive homes in the state, there are also 558 homes worth more than $1 million.
