WHEELING -- Belmont County officials have an unusual case on their hands. A horse is stranded on the edge of a cliff just off of Route 7 near Powhattan Point.

According to the Belmont County Sheriff's Department, the horse found its way onto the cliff from a wooded area .

When 7News crews arrived Friday evening, rescuers were packing up and calling it a night.

Friday afternoon, rescuers and a local veternarian walked along the ledge and got within thirty feet of the horse withion several occasions.

Th horse appears to be shy and afraid of humans but othwerwise is calm and uninjured.

Experts are still assessing the best way to rescue the horse.

7News learned from one of the rescuers, that steps were being dug out for the horse on the hillside.

It may take until tomorrow or longer to rescue the horse.

They plan to feed and water it tonight.

An animal rescue team from Frederick, Maryland was on the scene Friday, along with a veterinarian from Glen Dale.

The team hopes to secure the horse in a sling, sedate him, and then lower him to the ledge below, which runs the length of hillside.
