Two Belmont County teens are out of the hospital but in trouble with the law after an A-T-V accident last night near Maynard. They were thrown from the four-wheeler and taken to the hospital but given a number of citations from the Ohio Highway Patrol once they were released.
The driver of the ATV was a 17-year-old boy. The passenger was a 16-year-old girl. The accident occurred on Township Road 704 outside Maynard at nine o'clock Tuesday night. The Ohio Highway Patrol post commander says they were making a number of mistakes.
Lt. Roger Norris of the Ohio Highway Patrol said, "And just apparently was going too fast around a right-hand curve. He dove off the right side of I'm sorry the left side of the road, hit a couple shrubs and overturned, ejected both of them. Well anythime you're under 18 years of age you're required to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, ATV, whatever, if it's legal to be on the road. In this particular case, the driver didn't have an operator's license for it, the vehicle wasn't safe for the road, and both the teens were consuming alcohol which is illegal as well."
The driver is charged with operating without reasonable control, DUI and no operator's license. The passenger is charged with underage consumption of alcohol. Both teens are from the St. Clairsville area.
