ALUM BRIDGE --  A South Carolina man is dead after a motorcycle accident in Lewis County on Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened on Route 33 around 5:30 p.m. near Alum Bridge, Lewis County sheriff's deputies said.

Charles Willard Fitzhugh, 57, and his wife were traveling with a group of Harley-Davidson motorcyclists when he lost control and hit an embankment.

Both Fitzhugh and his wife were thrown from the bike, officials said.

Fitzhugh's wife was taken to Stonewall Jackson Hospital for treatment, while he died at the scene from apparent head trauma.

Deputies say Fitzhugh was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

State Police are assisting in the investigation.
