BENWOOD -- West Virginia University released a statement on Tuesday, stating that Mark Sampson, Jr., 18, Glendale, West Virginia, has been let go from the football team for violating team policy. Sampson was a Freshman walk-on running back.
Sampson along with former John Marshall baseball shortstop, Carson Koontz, 19, is accused of sexually assaulting a 17 year-old girl from Benwood.
Sampson was a stand-out receiver last year on John Marshall High School's football team.
According to the complaint, the 17-year-old female was approached by the two at a party on Saturday.
The female allegedly went with them to buy beer, but according to Benwood Police Lt. Dave McLaughlin, they never made it to their destination.
The complaint states the two men sexually assaulted the female multiple times in a car parked behind the former Union Junior High School.
“They were familiar with the people that did this offense. We don't want anybody be alarmed that there's anyone out there starting a trend of assaulting females in the area,” said McLaughlin.
Koontz was arrested Sunday night at his home and was taken to the Northern Regional Jail.
Sampson turned himself in Monday morning and posted a 125,000-dollar bond.
Both are facing four counts of sexual assault in the second degree.
