Kanawha Board of Health: Smoking Ban Will Remain in Effect

Board members renew their commitment to ban despite Harrison-Clarksburg Board of Health's suspension of similar rule last week.

CHARLESTON -- One week ago, the Harrison-Clarksburg Board of Health bowed to public pressure and suspended its new smoking ban until June of next year. However, their counterparts in Kanawha County say they intend to stand firm on the issue.

According to published reports, all members of the Kanawha-Charleston Board of Health remain committed to enforcing their recent ban on smoking in bars and gambling establishments, despite outcries from members of the public and many bar owners.

One reason behind the difference of opinion between the two boards may be that the Board in Harrison County includes elected officials, while the Kanawha County board is made up entirely of appointed members.

Why should the 80 percent of adults and all children who don't smoke be the ones to have to avoid areas where smoking is allowed? Smokers are a minority who can easily take their toxic fumes outdoors. That's the way that it's done in most areas of the US these days, and the way that makes most sense for West Virginia as well.

Non-smokers are a bunch of babies... All they do is whine and complain about how bad smoking is and how they don't want their kids to do it. GET OVER IT. Smoking never killed nobody in my family! I don't know nobody who die from smoking. The non smokers just make up lies and propagate these lies in our schools.

If you don't like the smoke, eat at home! In these hard economic times a smoking ban is going to hurt businesses.. Should we allow our businesses to go out of business because some minority can't stand the smell? Should we allow anyone who complains get their way? This is America! And we needs to live like Americans! FREE!
