African American Scholar Anna Julia Cooper to be honored with stamp.

Institute -- Postal officials and administrators from West Virginia State University gathered Thursday in Institute to unveil a postage stamp dedicated to Anna Julia Cooper.

Cooper’s stamp will be issued June 1st. It is the 31st stamp to be issued in the U.S. Post Office's Black Heritage Commemorative series.

Cooper was known as a scholar, educator, and activist. She was born into slavery in 1858 and was the fourth African American woman to earn a doctorate degree.

As an African American, and having lived, witnessed, and participated in the racial protest mpvement, I have a sense of the life of Anna Julia Cooper. I am encouraged and convinced that her story and stamp will be a great inspiration to ALL young people. They, too, can say "yes we can!"
