EMS Funds Used as Temporary Fix
Story by Jerry Echemann
MARTINS FERRY -- Police Chief Barry Carpenter is calling it a "satisfactory resolution for now" and a "step in the right direction." But Carpenter says the goal now must be a permanent solution to keeping dispatch in Martins Ferry.
Mayor Phil Wallace announced at City Council Thursday night that $20,000 from the EMS fund will be used to recind layoff notices.
Fire Chief Ed Duke said the dispatch is a valuable service to fire, EMS and police. Duke said he was happy to make this move now, but does not want to be asked again. Wallace said his meeting with Duke and EMS officials was a bit heated at times, but said the money is being provided by mutual agreement.
Martins Ferry has no paid firefighters, but does have four paid EMS. Wallace calls that service "profitable."
Carpenter will investigate the possible use of stimulus money to keep his dispatchers through the end of this year and beyond.
