Law Protecting Kids from Lead Bans ATVs
Posted Sunday, April 5, 2009 ; 10:43 AM | View Comments | Post Comment

A group of local business owners are pushing an exemption to the law.

MORGANTOWN -- A federal law put into place to protect children from lead poisoning has led to a ban on the sale of mini bikes and ATVs made for kids.

According to published reports, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 bans even tiny amounts of lead from any products designed for children. Since engines of motorcycle and ATVs contain lead; under law, the child-sized versions are prohibited to sale.

That law went into effect in February.

Local business owners, including Tim Cotter, of Racer Productions, a company based out of Morgantown, went to Washington, D.C. to discuss an exemption to the law with lawmakers. The group claims the law didn't exempt certain products or give specific details about the items that were to be included.

The Consumer Product Safety Committee agrees that all terrain vehicles and mini motorcycles should not be included in the bill and Nancy Nord, CPSC Chairman, voted in support of a one-year stay on the law so lawmakers have time to change the law to exclude ATVs and motorcycles.

We have yet to see what our politicians have planned for us. By the time the current President is out of office, we will have so few rights left, & it will be our fault for letting the democrates making us subjects, not citizens. That my friends is thier goal. What's next, banning children & maybe even adults from fishing, because of the hooks, or because it's cruel to the fish? We have to use seat belts in our cars, along with baby seats & booster seats, & not one school bus has them. Baby seats & booster seats have save countless children, but I guess it does not matter when they are on a school bus. We are allowing our rights to be flushed. The sad part is, we don't have millions & millions of dollors to run for office, but we send people to Washington DC who could care less about us.

As a 17 year old high school student, i take much interest in governmental issues. Every since i can remember, i have obtained toys with lead and thus far has not damaged me in anyway. I believe that the government needs to back off due to the fact that parents will use their knowledge whether a "toy" is suitable for their child. As far as ATV's go, safety measures should be taken such as wearing a helmet and such but as far as taking the smaller version of the ATV off the market is a bit ridiculous, but that's our government for us. Slowly they are taking control of everything that we partake in. We need to take action before it starts to really effect our lives.

Wow. Daily we are being regulated and letting it be done to us. Tsk tsk America for being such spinelss beings. Instead of 'blogging' or 'texting' or any of the other retarded ways we are preoccupied so we are obliviated by what is happening, band together as we once did and get the job done right! We are loosing our rights quicker than we can imagine. Can you say 'Tea Party'?

The United States is becoming a nanny state country with government controlling more and more of our daily activities. I personally feel that children shouldn't be permitted to operate motorized vehicles but that's just my opinion but I don't believe politicians need to micromanage our lives.
