CHARLESTON -- A few Mountain State teachers were honored Wednesday for standing out above the rest.
The West Virginia Department of Education recognized top teachers in the county for 2010.
And one educator tonight took home the title of West Virginia Teacher of the year.
That teacher is Gretchen Shaffer, a math teacher at Morgantown High School in Monongalia County.
There were nine finalists this year competing...and organizers say it was a tough decision.
"It's gotta be such an honor to think that you are recognized as the teacher of the year, knowing that there are so many other people out there that have the same capabilities," said Executive Director of Human Resources, David Perine.
The teacher of the year ceremony is the longest ongoing awards program honoring classroom teachers. The first award was given in 1964.
