WHEELING -- The American Planning Association (APA) announced Wednesday that North Main Street has been designated one of 10 Great Streets for 2009 by APA's Great Places in America program.

The American Planning Association singled out North Main Street for it's significant Victorian architecture, great eateries, and the Heritage Trail.

“North Main Street is the heart of the North Wheeling neighborhood,” said Mayor Andy McKenzie.

North Wheeling resident Mark Ferrell said it took a lot of work to make the neighborhood a special place.

"It's the cooperation of the City of Wheeling and the residents that make people really enjoy living here," said Ferrell.

Owners of the historic Eckhart House at 810 N. Main St., Joe and Gretchen Figaretti said the neighborhood is gorgeous.

"There are some of the most fabulous victorian homes in all of the United States here in North Wheeling," said Joe Figaretti.

The nine other APA 2009 Great Streets are:

Broadway Street, Skagway, AK

President Clinton Avenue, Little Rock, AR

Front Street, Bath, ME

South Main Street, Ann Arbor, MI

Front Street, Traverse City, MI

Haddon Avenue, Collingswood, NJ

Main Street, Greenville, SC

Duke of Gloucester Street, Williamsburg, VA

East Newberry Boulevard, Milwaukee, WI
