MORGANTOWN -- The Sunnyside neighborhood of Morgantown is showing some improvement after $50,000 worth of donated time. The Sunnyside Up coalition and West Virginia University's Student Government Association led a tour of some of the changes Wednesday.
"We recgonize that this is not the same Sunnyside of a couple years ago," says Sunnyside Up Exec. Director Jim Hunt, "and it's turning the corner to where now we are building a community."
Garbage removal and beautification are some of the visible changes, but the biggest change is the student population. It is now investing in the largest student neighborhood in Morgantown.
"They want to show the city of Morgantown, City Council, that students care," said WVU SGA President Jason Zuccari. "Students want to give back and they're not here just for fun."
The $50,000 figure was pledged volunteer time by the last SGA class. Zuccari says his class will continue the pledge for a second year, though the exact figure has not been determined.
Meanwhile, Morgantown Mayor Bill Byrne says he is stepping down from the Sunnyside board. Byrne says he does not have the time he feels should be devoted to the project.
A city council member is expected to step in.
