WHEELING -- A Wheeling police officer's stolen assault weapon is on the streets of the Ohio Valley. Now police need your help to locate it.
This M16 rifle was stolen on Oct. 21, and an internal investigation is under way.
Wheeling Police Chief Robert Matheny said the SWAT officer had every right to carry his weapon in his own vehicle, but someone broke into it and stole the M16 from underneath the seat. The chief now is concerned because the weapon is out on the streets and he admits now he's rethinking policies on officers carrying assault weapons.
If you have any information on the stolen M16 assault weapon, you're urged to call our Crime Fighters Tipline at at 1-800-223-0312.
The officer whose weapon stolen lives outside of the city limits, therefore, the West Virginia State Police is investigating.
