MORGANTOWN -- Wednesday is Veterans Day, but some local students learned about local veterans a day early.
Morgantown High School held a "Take a Vet to School Day," Tuesday. It is one of 13 schools in the state to participate in the History Channel initiative.
"We are fortunate to have Comcast bring the 'Take a Veteran to School Day' program back to Morgantown High," said principal Robert DeSantis, "It has proven to be an enriching experience for our students."
A morning ceremony honored the veterans in attendence. They were also treated to lunch at the high school. In the afternoon, a panel of five veterans answered questions from a group of students.
The veterans also spoke about their individual experiences serving their country, bringing history out of the textbooks for students.
"They're really fascinated by the stories from the World War II and Korean and Vietnam war veterans," said MHS teacher Richard Vidulich.
The West Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association sponsored the event, which was launched in part by Sen. John D. Rockefeller (D-WV). Through Nov. 19, similar programs are scheduled for Huntington, Charleston, Clarksburg, Fairmont, Fayetteville, Hinton, Buckhannon, Parkersburg, Bluefield, Inwood, Hurricane and Wellsburg.
