Eleven presidents have had some contact with the gavel.

FAIRMONT -- A piece of U.S. history was on display in Fairmont Tuesday afternoon.

The local Masonic Lodge arranged to have a gavel used by George Washington, who was also a Free Mason, brought to the Marion County Courthouse.

Ten other U.S. presidents; James Polk, Millard Fillmore, James Buchanan, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, have also either used the gavel or been present when it has been used.

After the presentation, people were able to put on museum gloves and actually hold the gavel.

Other artifacts were also on display.
