ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Testimony continued Thursday morning in the trial of a former police chief accused of trying to sell photos of items belonging to the surrogate mother for actress Sarah Jessica Parker.
Special Prosecutor Shaun Hervey played seven audio tapes which reveal Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter admits that he is guilty of complete stupidity.
Carpenter said when he told the Paparazzi and Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack that he had personal items belonging to Parker's surrogate mother he was just joking with them.
Carpenter admitted the joke backfired on him.
What could be called damaging audio tapes for Carpenter reveal in the very first tape played for the jury, Carpenter laughed when Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations Special Agent Mark Roar informed him of the investigation.
On later tapes, Carpenter began crying when he was questioned by Roar.
Prosecutors are trying to lay the ground work that Carpenter's story evolved and changed each time he was interviewed about the alleged breakin at the home of surrogate Michelle Ross.
Carpenter later admitted to meeting with the Paparazzi after he was urged to do so by Dojack.
Michelle Ross took the stand at 1:30 p.m. to talk about the items which were taken from the home.
