FAIRMONT -- The Fairmont Police Department is investigating a shooting outside the Wize Guyz bar on Fairmont Avenue and Fifth Street.

The incident happened about 3 a.m. Friday.

The victim, Henry Richardson, 23, of South Carolina, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital, according to police. Police have not released his condition.

Richardson is a senior at Fairmont State University and a linebacker on the Falcon football team, according to police and the school's Web site.

Investigators have recovered some evidence, but said so far, they haven't filed any charges, police said.

If you can help, call the Fairmont Detective Division at 304-366-2217.

First and Foremost I think the FPD are doing there jobs to the best of there ability. Most likely the police that were sitting across the street from the bar didnt realize the extent of the altercation before it was too late.Furthermore Faimont police probably only had, at the most 6 or seven patrolman working the entire city at the time so the one or two guys that were at the scene did what they were trained to do and called for backup. The police in our city do what they get paid for Traffic stops, citations and such. Do you people think that a cop is gonna risk his life and his family for 9 bucks an hour over some gangsters shooting it out in a parking lot. I know i wouldnt. Our City is so broke right now that our officers are attending city council meetings begging for bullet proof vest and are being denied. Attend a meeting or watch ch. 19 and find out .People need to stop complaining about the fact the someone running away from a crime scene was detained and held for 12 hrs because in that type of situation if it was one of your family members that got shot you would hope that the police would round up anybody and everybody that was running in hopes that the shooter would be one of them. The Bottom line is that fairmont is a gold mine for out of town drug dealers because college kids buy drugs and there really isnt much to do around here. As far as the comments about "They are thugs because there poor and got to make money somehow to eat" That is a load of horseshit! Ive been poor my entire life and never robbed anyone or sold drugs. If You can afford a gun you can afford to make resume's and go out and look for a legitmate job. If you cant afford to feed your kids without being a criminal, put them up for adoption or dont have them.I understand accidents happen but but there are plenty of programs that offer assistence to familys in need. Gansters wanna make Big, Fast, Easy money but guess what so doesnt everyone else Its just not going to happen so we work.I dont know anything about the man that was shot and i hope he recovers with no ill affects. As far as the shooter He made his choice. As for the man that was Abused by the police and detained for 12 hours im sorry for your circumstance but i believe that it is a necessary evil in this case for all the police know you could have been a murderer and they treated you as such. This city is not gonna change with the cops its gonna change when its citizens stop being afraid to take a stand in thier own neighborhoods. If you see a drug dealer on your corner you round up a posse and you beat him until he cant walk then you call the police to come take him to jail. BOONDOCK SAINTS watch it , get motivated , Do something

Dear BMAC: I have spent plenty of time in large cities around the world. The difference is I don't go into any place, let alone another city, and try to cause trouble. 99.9% of the time if you act like a respectable person you will get the respect that you deserve. And just so we are clear I have no fear of you finding out who I truely am, it takes more than a Thug Wannabe kid from Fairmont with a spelling problem to frighten me. Again, may I suggest a round of mini golf at Coal Country?

I am sorry for the shooting victim and I am sorry for the young man harrassed by the police even though he had nothing to do with it, however, is all of this really that hard to figure out? One mother is praying her son will be ok and have a full recovery and one mother is mad as heck because her son was treated brutally by the FPD. Let's look at the real issue. Who cares where or how you were brought up? Who cares that you may think you are a gangster? and who cares how you dress although you may look ridiculous, who cares? If you do not like the type of people who frequent that particular bar, stay away. If you think the FPD sucks, then join and make it better. Stop and look at what is really important. We all can try to be more respectful and more patient. I am not talking to just the younger people I mean ALL people. I am 47 and get road range and there are people in grocery stores I'd like to push out of the way, but that's probably not the best way to go about it...Try to slow down, don't be critical of others and just try to have a decent day. You never know what that person may be going through. Tomorrow marks 4 years since my son, (my oldest child and my only boy) was killed in a car accident, he was only 20 so trust me, sometimes just being nice can make all the difference in the world.

First - Philly...dont be naive please..if you believe the whole "if you wanna kill somebody and get away with it go to ENTER WEST VIRGINIA CITY HERE" then please go right ahead..

BMAC PLEASE STOP talking...or typing..or whatever you are doing...if you are so hard and so thug..what are you doing on a computer? AND does this computer keyboard have vowels on it? if you dont understand I WILL spell it out for you so that you do: PLZ STOP POZ TIN STUFF JUZ 2 PROVE HOW TUFF U R. get real!

AGAIN why is everyone missing the bigger point? WHY get on here and attack everyone and everyone's opinion? THE BOTTOM LINE is that a young man was shot PERIOD. Our thoughts and prayers should be with him right now!

and sara (which if i had to take a guess i think that you would have some background in policing? criminal justice as well as graduating from Fairmont State as well? Am i close?) I agree...as a huge milk drinker myself, i cant even begin to fathom what the price is going to be for a glass of chocolate milk down the road...

can someone tell me what makes a city tough? The last time I checked the bullets used in shootings in Fairmont are probably the same bullets used in your so called "big city". It must be the "GRILLS" ya'll wear in your mouths that make you tough. Or the stupid hand signs you make like a call signal or somthing. Oh wait I know what it is... the big shirts and pants oh yes that shows a true gangsta. Get a life and a job and contribute to society instead of infesting it. And OMG get over the fact that there WILL always be people "Police, President, Wal-Mart Managers ect".. that will have more authority than you. Turn on some good old bugs bunny cartoons and relax. Also--the RUMOR about Fairmont being the most unsolved murder city... uh well if you think thats true I wonder who else has pulled the wool over your eyes...: )

To BMAC: I would like to buy a vowel please.

I can't help but laugh at all these "kiddies" who think Fairmont is a real tough city. I would love to fund a program where we take these ghetto thug kids and place them on the streets of a real city and see how long they last. Do us all a favor go play Coal Country mini golf and be quiet.

My prayers are with the young man who was shot and his family.

As I read through these postings, I am saddened. No one chooses the family they are born into. No one chooses the skin color they are born with. No one chooses the parents they have or the neighborhood they grow up in. We do have choices though. We can choose our friends. We can choose our dreams. We can choose the morals we will follow in our lives. We can choose the road that we will take. The good news is that God made us all and he doesn't make "junk". It is satan that brings all this evil into the world. We need to get back to God and the lifestyle that he commands. It is only then that we can take back our neighborhoods and our cities and even our country. Then the world will be a better place to live in until we are finally called home to heaven.

Do some research before you run your mouths so you don't look so silly people. www.city-data.com. It will show you that even in Morgantown there is crime, and I bet it even happens when the police are present. Morgantowns crime index is above the US avg, and Fairmonts is well below. There is also only 1.79 officers per 1,000 people in Fairmont and the US avg is 3.00 officers per 1,000 people. I'd say FPD is doing pretty well considering the numbers. I have even heard that people shoot policeofficers in America. I have heard that people speed, run stop signs, and even drive drunk while police are behind them. And oh my you will be shocked to hear this, THERE HAVE BEEN STABBINGS AND SHOOTINGS OUTSIDE THE BARS IN MORGANTOWN, PITTSBURGH, WHEELING, AND EVEN MARTINSBURG WHEN THE POLICE WERE PRESENT. But anyway, I think it's all the price of milk that is to blame. If milk were cheaper people would have way more money and we could all expect no crime. So I think you should gripe about milk prices, more people will care and you may get cheaper milk.

First, Has anyone asked why the football player was even there? I am sure there are rules for anyone that is an athlete at a college.

Second, I cant stop laughing at all of you people on here that just agree to disagree - I mean, dont church this up it is what it is. Fairmont lets things like grow instead of putting their foot down early. GO TO THE CAMPUS and speak and educate the students about what their actions can cause. Be more involved in the community instead of looking for "drunk drivers". I've been pulled over 2 times in the last 3 months for "failure to stay right of the yellow lines" Which anyone that has ever driven in fairmont knows that those lines are so old and those roads are so narrow that its impossible to drive withing out toucht them - the first thing that the officer asked me was "have you had anything to drink tonight" I responded no, and he told me to have a nice night.

SECOND yes, the police are a problem. Ive spoken with older officers and they are sick to death about how the youth in the force are taking over. THEY MONITOR all fraternity parties and control which ones are allowed to continue while shutting them down. HONESTLY ask any officer which Frat they are from and you will see what I am speaking about.

Now, i know everyone is harping about thug life and trying to be hard but come on..its FAIRMONT WEST VIRGINIA. It makes me laugh how tough some people think they are. Fairmont lets these kids live the life. They run wild and there is nothing done about it. AS for wize guyz..Serisously? Has anyone even asked why its been called so many names? It gets shut down, and reopened weekly.

Last, anyone that has any sort of an IQ, its not hard to see where the problems are...looks at the stats: ALMOST NO CRIME when school is not in...

OH and i cant help but address this:BMAC please learn how to spell and stop using caps and cool slang words to hide the fact that you are trying to be tough. IF you have a problem with anyone or want to see change go down to the courthouse, contact your mayor and make a change. DONT get on here and type in all caps and pretend you are trying to make a change.

Keep the player in your prayers and hope for his recovery.

TO-SADDENED. I AGREE THE PERSON WHO PULLD THE TRIGGER IS AT 100% FAULT. BUT THATS NT THE ISSUE. THE ISSUE IS THAT THE COPS ABUSED AND ARRSTD AN INNOCENT YOUNG MAN AFTER THEY SAT AT THE TANNING SALON AND WATCHD THE MAN SHOT THE OTHER MAN AND RUN. ALL THE COPS DID WAS YELLED STOP. AND WATCHD THE MAN RUN AWAY. THEN SAT THERE AND WAITD FOR THE SHERIFFS DEPT. THE ONLY REASON THIS IS A DEBATE IS BECUZ THESE FAIRMONT POLICE OFFICERS ARE GETTING PAID TO DO NOTHING. SEE WAT THE OFFICERS DO IS WAIT FOR THE CLUB TO LET OUT SO THEY CAN ARREST PPL STANDING OUTSIDE TALKIN TO THERE FRIENDS. THE COPS JUS WANT OUR FINE MONEY. BUT WEN SOMTHIN SERIOUS HAPPENS THEY STAND AROUND STUPID LIK THEY DDNT GO TO AN ACADEMY AND LEARN HW TO HANDLE THESE SITUATIONS. THATS THE ONLY PROBLEM ANY1 HAS. AND JUS SO U KNW MOST PPL WHO SHOOT GUNS R JUS SHOOTN BECUZ THEY WANT A REPUTATION. THEY WANT PPL TO THINK THEY "GO HARD" OR "ARE TOUGH GUYS". THEY REALLY DNT WANNA KILL SOM1 DOWN INSIDE. BUT IMEAN THATS JUS MY OPINION.

Heather - that is great that you are in school and doing something for yourself - I am not juding you "fairmont people" - I am a Fairmont person. I live in Fairmont, have all of my life. I do not think that I am any better than you or anyone else. - However, I will say that I can assure you that I could not defend an attempt on taking someones life and then start blaming the cops - I would think that the majority of blame here should be placed on the person who pulled the trigger. Just a thought. God Bless :-)

So sad to read all of the comments on here about "we were not born with a silver spoon" - I grew up on welfare, but I'm not running around talking about how lifes not fair and how no one has walked in my shoes. You know what I did? - I got a new pair of shoes (i.e. graduated college and I now a great job and I pay my bills with an honest paycheck) So to ustupidmfrs, BMAC and everyone else on here to agrees with them - Many prayers for you to realize that no matter how you were raised or what background you are from, YOU are the only one who can make it better. There are opportunities all around you that can allow you to do GOOD things for yourself AND others. I pray you open your eyes and see them. God Bless

Mama.....since you are so curious to know, no BMAC and I do not live in the same household..... ""There are an awful lot of arrest details, knees, boots, kidneys.....was there an actual witness or to many cops episodes?"" ........this means what? This was MY child this happened to, so of course I know details, and yes there were winesses to this happening. My son is NOT a thug, nor does he carry a weapon. I was NOT brought up with a silver spoon in my mouth and everything I have I worked for as well, WITHOUT welfare.....what is your point? I am the ONLY strong adult in their life because their father is deceased, by natural causes, if you want to know that too. I feel extremely bad about the young man who was shot and his family. Thank God he is doing well and continues to recover. Everyone, including me, is concerned about the victim and his family, but I am also concerned about MY OWN CHILD who was/is a victim of brutality by the FPD. So you are saying it's okay that they beat the crap out of my son because someone is laying in the hospital with gunshot wounds?? If he were guilty, I would almost have to look over the situation and say he got what he deserved for shooting someone. Your environment sounds pretty sheltered and unknowing. Speak on things you know. You cannot blame parents for everything. We do the best we can for our children as parents, and sometimes it just isn't good enough, children still stray and do the things we taught them NOT to do. Don't breed what you can't feed- I like that. It has a nice fairytale ring to it. Today you may be fine financially and have a child, and 5 years from now, it may be all gone...for one reason or another.

U know what the funniest thing of all about this whole strory is that not only did one person in this situation get hurt, but someone who didnt have anything to with this shooting did get hurt, yes i know most of the ppl that have been writting comments its not a thug state of mind, no victim, no boo hoo on us...the fact is white ppl are stupid and no im not black, its the truth...these are high school honor role kids, with no promise. Yes i know alot about this more than most cuz the streets talk, i just listen...You ppl think its all cool but its not yes, respect to the person that was shot and his family, but i also respect the shooter. No its not going to peaceful and happy dreams but i do know that FPD needs some renivations other than just the outside of that new dept building

Has anyone noticed that our young people seem to have a high tolerance for violence. Just look at the 2 separate crimes in Harrison County. These children will one day be the care takers of our country! Such a scary thought. There is a big difference between high IQ and common sense. Most have one or the other and rarely have both. I AM kinda curious to know if Medea and BMAC were residents of the same household at the same time. BMAC doesn't seem to have as many good memories as Medea does. Most people weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouth. I know that I wasn't, practically homeless as a child, held 3 jobs as a parent (without welfare) and earned everything I have. I am also a firm believer in "don't breed what you can't feed!" If someone is carrying a gun they are looking for trouble and any shooting would be premeditated. There are an awful lot of arrest details, knees, boots, kidneys.....was there an actual witness or to many cops episodes? These children seem to be way to proud of their THUG mentallity so maybe there should be some stronger adults in their lives. There should be more sorrow for them and not so much anger. We have someones son in the hospital with a gun shot wound and we are angry about someone being questioned by the police, good or bad. If it was my son I would want every one questioned. We are going to hell in a hand basket and our children are leading the way. But they are their environment so maybe we should look at our parenting skills or lack of. By the way Heather do you put food in that filty hole you call a mouth? I bet it makes your mother proud that you can't express yourself without cussing! Is that a high IQ or common sense? PRAYERS TO THE VICTIM AND FAMILY!

Sounds like Heather knows a good deal of information about the shooting, maybe she was there, but I'd say probably not. Her information probably came from third hand knowledge with added embellishment along the way. Surely there is a person who knows who the shooter is, but then again I guess its easier to lay blame on everyone else then to get involved and help clean up "your" streets

I say that the "thug" probably deserved to be shot. I'm sure the shooting was somehow drug related, so who really cares if the all kill each other off..... I know I don't. I don't frequent bars, and self respecting people with good sense have no business in a bar anyway.

Donna...SA....K....First and Foremost, my son has a pretty high IQ. That is not the issue at hand. The issue is, my other son ran FROM the shooting, NOT the police and was snatched up, taken to the police department, questioned for over 12 hours for something that HE DID NOT DO! Before taking him to the police station, he was thrown on the cement on his face, and kneed hard repeatedly in the lower back (kidneys) and his stomped on by the FPD boots. And he did exactly what they asked of him. Oh, and did I mention that he was never fed at the police department? They offered him nothing! You call it what you want to call it, I call it police brutality. My son has NEVER owned a gun, so what the hell are you talking about? My sons were NOT raised in a violent manner.....they have plenty of common sense.....if someone is shooting, RUN LIKE HELL! I actually care for my child too....who the hell are you to say that I do not? Dysfunctional? Fairmont is one big dysfunction! Those of you who claim to have no dysfunction, are those fake people we see everyday in the City of Fairmont, then going home at night getting beat by your wonderful husband, going home at night being undercover alcoholics....come on now, be real. My son was simply going to a bar that he IS old enough to be in to have a good time, WITHOUT a loaded gun or looking for trouble. If there is a rise in crime in Fairmont, would it not be in our best interest to hire more police officers? It is pretty sad that the police have been present at ALL shootings that have occured at this club....the first time, THEY RAN { Go Figure!}....the second time, the person shot AROUND the officers and THE OFFICERS ran again...this third time, the FPD officers were RIGHT there, and waited on the Marion County Sheriff's Dept. to get there before doing anything....so who would you blame?? Of course people need to take responsibilty for their actions...but if they can shoot amid the FPD, they are going to continue to do so. What does "being a little white guy" have to do with anything? Does it matter what color people are? Maybe in your world, it does, but in ours it does not. Yes there are a few good officers in our FPD.But I bet you didn't know that a lot of them are/were under investigation for falsifying police reports.......I bet you didn't know that several racial profiling cases have been brought against the FPD, I bet you didn't know that the area of Fourth Street, labeled by the FPD as high crime and drug area is also the area where several of the officers go to visit their "Mistresses"....and it also the area where MANY of them go to get their drugs...WOW....bet you did not know these things about Fairmont's Finest did you? So, our young children see these things and know these things...what do you think they think of FPD? Before you start arguing in a post, with people that are obviously minors, think about what you say and do. I personally don't call that "common sense." These children are angry, and hurt...take that into consideration. I'm a grown woman, and will act as such.

In looking back at these comments, one thing is definite in my mind. People want to put the blame on others, instead of taking responsibility for themselves.

To BMAC (and HEATHER & USTUPIDMFRS)--We shouldn't have to "MOVE 2 THE COUNTRY..." We live in Fairmont. If you want to act this way, and continue the violence you were raised on, then go back to the 'real city'. Don't bring your disfunctional upbringing to Fairmont. We actually care for our children, and don't want your influence around. (Obvoiusly, neither did your parents!)

Most of us were not raised with money or trust funds. However, we were raised with common sense. We aren't stupid enough to go to a bar, carrying a loaded weapon, and look for trouble!!

To BMAC, you need to go to school and learn how to correspond in an intelligent manner so others can understand you. You come off as very ignorant when you can't spell or form a complete thought within a sentence. Perhaps if you got a decent education you could also find a decent job and wouldn't have to worry about how to pay your bills. Oh wait, maybe you should continue with the "poor me" victim routine and never accept responsibility for your own actions, or lack thereof, which caused the situation you are in.

As i read these comments i can't help but laugh. You want to blame the FPD, you should be blaming the person who did the shooting! Not the Bar or the FPD. It is time that people relize that the person who committed the crime is at fault! So lets stop blaming everyone else. In reality there are not enough police officers in Fairmont to prevent all crimes from happening! They are not fortune tellers. so no they can not predict when and where a crime will happen. So instead of blaming them lets start thanking them for risking their lives everyday!

Give me a break, maybe the citizens of Fairmont can tell their City Council to get Law Enforcement officers a crystal ball so they will be all seeing and all knowing, thus enabling them to be always at the right place at the right time. Wouldn't the world be a better place. This isn't Wonderland Alice. Its not a perfect world and it never will be

bmac your attitude toward the problem is part of the problem, you suggest if you don't like what is happening just move out of town. This is the last thing residents should do. Residents should attend council meetings, voice their concerns and expect answers to the problems. Keep going to council until the area is cleaned up. The newspaper should also get very involved in making sure council, police and other agencies do their jobs. Reporters should also talk to residents of this town and print their ideas and concern. It does take the community to help law enforcement.

I can vouch for the police presence on Fairmont Ave late at night They are more concerned with catching drunk drivers because they get to fine them and put money in the city coffers. There's no fine for shooting someone, so therefore nothing gets done about it. As far as the bars, I think the main problem is that Wize Guys is pretty much the only bar/club for FSU students to go to. If they had a normal bar (sports, music, live bands) close to campus as opposed this thug wannabe bar that would solve a lot of the problems. The closer to campus, the better as to reduce drunk driving.

You can't stop young people from drinking and partying, so might as well attempt to do so in a safer environment where people can have a good time without worrying about getting shot, and can walk back to their dorm/apartment without having to drive impaired.

But of course the city council won't let you put a bar near the University even though 98% of other universities have MANY bars within walking distance of student residences. So now you have to drive to a bar that you may get shot at as your only option.

The problem is not just the bar, if it gets shut down, the violence will just move to another bar. That's just a simple fact. The problem is with our police force, this makes the 2nd shooting where Fairmonts Finest has been standing in the parking lot when it happened! Now there are a few good officers with FPD, but the majority of the force is afraid they might mess up their hair if they do something like THIER JOB!! FPD just needs restructured from the top down. Maybe they ought to use Grafton Police Dept. as an example, you don't hear of this kind of violence over there. Of course Grafton doesn't have the drug problem like Fairmont does, Because their police force does not tolerate it. Everyone knows Fairmont is the drug capital of WV. Get rid of the drugs and the violent crimes will decrease as well.

That bar is a true problem. That is, at least, the second shooting there and what about all of the fights? I know of one guy that ended up in the hospital with multiple serious injuries.Of course, nothing was done to help this guy. Too many young kids are permitted in the bar and the owner sits at the door to accept or reject people that want in. Something needs done.I know it is the place to be in Fairmont, especially on Thurs and Sat....but come on!

Suprise!!! another shooting at Wise Guys,I think that its crazy that the city police would even allow this to happen to begin with its not like they dont sit across the freaking parking lot at the tanning salon waiting for a crime. Something needs to be done about the bar its self, I mean Wise Guys is the only place that i know of that allows under aged drinking, i mean you have to be 18 right...or do you Pat? So the Shooter is caught but what happens when this headline fads, NOTHING, I think the real crime is lack of proper law enforement. To behonest im suprised FPD even caught someone, oh wait wasnt it the County Police Dept. that had someone in custody...but my sources could be wrong anyways. This club is just getting out of hand and its only going to get worse as the poplulation of FSU gets bigger. well Fairmont lets just get used to this oh wait we already have..

One thing we can count on in WV...a bar and gambling on every corner - followed with violence and pain. Our state and business owners (as well as the customer's of these business) encourage crime and violence then everyone appears shocked by the fall out. If only we'd crack down on drinking and gambling as we have smoking...

it's not the bars, even though that one has quite the reputation now, people will find any reason to do what they want to do, i think the police know this bar has a reputation, and should do more to watch it
