CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Department of Transportation has their eyes on the Nitro-St. Albans Bridge.

Secretary Paul Mattox says the DOT wants to include the structure in their six-year plan, but adds there may not be enough money to address other needs across the state. So, DOT is now looking at a rehabilitation project for the bridge to give it a new lease on life until funds are available to replace it.

"We would remove the bridge deck, maybe some of the steel stringers. Replace the support system, the structural support system that holds up the concrete deck. We would also look at cleaning and painting the entire structure," Mattox said.

The last time the bridge had major rehabilitation work done was in the mid 1970s, he said. There's no word yet on when the state will make a decision regarding the bridge.

What's actually needed is a new bridge that extends over the railroads on both sides of the river with an access road over to I-64.
