BECKLEY -- On Friday lines at major retailers were large enough to scare the children most of the shopping was done for. Saturday brought shorter lines, but just as many bargain hunters.
At the Blue Roo in Beckley, shoppers filed in and out snagging gently used merchandise for a fraction of the cost of new products.
Beverly Kaylor is one such shopper. Her daughter is expecting, which means they were shopping for Christmas and a baby shower in one stop.
“In this day and age you have to save every penny, and pinch what you can,” says Mitchell.
She found her daughter pants, shirts, and of course several baby outfits. It was a successful day, one that management says isn’t hard on any given day.
“Face it, America loves to shop,” says Kelly Griffith of Blue Roo, “We get a lot of stuff new with tags on it. Of course it is consignment priced so they’re going to buy it and hopefully re-wrap and re-gift it!”
Griffith says after 15 years she thought she had seen it all in this business. That was before Friday, a day in which the store saw the most business in all her years.
She believes that it is a direct result of the economy.
“People are needing stuff, like every year, but can’t afford it.”
Others like Kaylor, are simply happy to have a place to go. With overtime a thing of the past at her work, she’ll go where the deals are.
“You’ve got to cut corners where you can and this is a nice store, everything is nice and clean,” says Kaylor.
