Could be weeks before the shot is available to the general public in Jackson County.

RIPLEY -- Concerned parents in Jackson County headed to their local health department Tuesday.

It was the first time the H1N1 vaccine was offered to the public outside of a school setting.

Children five years of age or younger were invited to the Health Department offices Dec. 1 to get the vaccination.

Brenda Webb was their with her granddaughter. She said her pediatrician wasn't going to be able to offer the vaccine until later in December.

They had also been to a clinic in Wood County but weren't able to get the vaccine.

So when she heard that the Jackson County health department was offering a clinic Tuesday she jumped at the opportunity.

But she says deciding whether or not to get the vaccine wasn't something her family took lightly.

"We've seen children die from the swine flu but we haven't seen any complications from the vaccine so we are gonna get the vaccine," Webb said.

More clinics are planned throughout the week.

Parents and guardians of children 6-months of age or younger can get vaccinated on Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 3 p.m.

On Friday, Dec. 4, those between the ages of 18 and 42, with high risk medical conditions, can receive the vaccine from 8 to 11 a.m.

People between the age of 45 and 64 can get the vaccine from 1 to 3:30 p.m., also on Dec. 4.

I think it is really sad that someone from Wood County can come to Jackson County and receive a H1N1 vaccination and my son was denied the shot until 12/12/09 - once all age groups have had the opportunity, IF there are any still available because he missed his school vaccination date due to a school oversight of his signed persmission form.

My son has severe asthma and is on Advair inhalers twice daily, not to mention breathing treatments and other medications, yet my high risk, Jackson County child must wait.
