BRIDGEPORT -- Tanner Belt's family has quite a background in construction, and it's helped him decide what he wants to do.

"I've just always been around construction my whole life, and I know civil engineers and it's just seems fun," he shared Wednesday evening at a networking event at the Harrison Count Division of Harrison County.

But to make completely sure that it's for him, he's enrolling in a summer internship to learn more about his field of choice.

The EdVenture Group and the Harrison County School board are bringing the 2010 Transportation Technology Internship Experience to students and teachers around the county.

"This gives them the opportunity to look at that beforehand and make a determination that, 'Oh, I could get this job, and I could stay in this area,'" said Jennifer Wotering, spokeswoman for the EdVenture Group.

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded funding for this program to Harrison County.

The grant will also help area teachers become more informed about the field, and how to get their students interested.

"They're asked to develop a lesson around 21st Century skills and various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers focused on education," said Wotering. "That lesson they can then take and utilize in their classroom again to get the information to the students that there are these careers available and make it fun for them and hands-on and engaging."

Officials from the Kelly Miller Foundation think it's a good opportunity for young minorities in our area to get started in a great career.

"I think it would be a great opportunity to get minorities interested in some of the fields, the engineering, and other fields that they're having the internships with, and giving them an opportunity in the summer to have an internship to have something to do and hopefully become interested in one of these fields," said Foundation representative James Griffith.
