BECKLEY -- Conditions will remain on the quiet side today, but a storm system could be bringing a "Winter Wonderland" of sorts by the weekend.
High pressure in charge today will leave mostly sunny skies. Expect some high, thin clouds and temperatures closer to normal. By the afternoon most spots will rise into the upper 30s and low 40s.
Clouds will increase overnight, with lows dipping into the mid 20s in most spots. Friday will start off dry, but the clouds will be around for the morning commute.
A low pressure system moving up along the east coast will bring the chance of precipitation into the area by Friday afternoon. Rain showers will switch to snowflakes by late in the day.
Snow showers continue overnight and through a good part of the day Saturday. While it's difficult at this time to pinpoint exact number accumulations, several inches of snow are possible through much of the area. The highest snowfall looks to come in our southern and eastern counties - regionally the highest accumulations will come to the southeast of our area, into portions of Virginia.
At this point a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Bland and Giles Counties in Virginia, which will be effective Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.
While some may enjoy the snow and the scenery it provides approaching the Christmas holiday, it will obviously cause some difficult road conditions. So, if you've got plans to travel or do any last-minute shopping or errands, low visibilities and slick roadways may be of concern.
The main snow event will wrap up late Saturday, but scattered snow showers remain in the forecast for the end of the weekend and Monday. In addition, these days look to be very cold, as highs Sunday and Monday are expected to only reach the upper 20s.
