FAIRMONT -- This year's snowstorms have canceled several local sporting events, but one event coming up on Saturday has two basic rules: it can't be canceled due to snow, and you can't whine about the weather.
The Sixth Annual Fairmont Ice Bowl Charity Disc Golf Tournament is set for this Saturday, Feb. 20.
The tournament will raise money for Fairmont’s Soup Opera.
Disc golf is a variation on the old classic, using a Frisbee-like disc to score.
Organizers say people compete in Ice Bowls across the country on this day, and always to raise money for charities.
"We're gong to hold the event next Saturday, rain or shine or snow or sleet or whatever are all the possibilities this time of year,” assured Phillip Burton, treasurer for the West Virginia Disc Golf Association. “People kind of get into the spirit of it. It's fun and we've got a good foot, foot and a half of snow on the ground up there, and we're going to play anyway. Sometimes people tape ribbons on their discs so if they go down in the snow, they can hopefully find the ribbon anyway."
Registration will start at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Seth Burton Memorial Disc Golf Complex in Pleasant Valley. Beginners are welcome.
