WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County School Board will begin a search for a new superintendent after Mary Kay DeGarmo submitted a request for her retirement.

According to DeGarmo, it is time to retire, giving June 30 as her last official day.

The board accepted her retirement at the March 8 meeting.

Her retirement comes on the heels of a tumultuous school year.

At the beginning of this year, one of the high school’s assistant football coaches, Zach Harvey, was accused of sharing plays with a rival team. Those accusations were unfounded.

Recently, the high school wrestling Coach Harry Alward, 51, was arrested shortly after the OVAC Wrestling Tournament in Wheeling, accused of soliciting a prostitute.

A few weeks later, acting wrestling Coach Jonathan McFarland was arrested in Ohio County for an alleged DUI.

McFarland is currently on a leave of absence from the district.

The district named Rod Pattison, a vocational teacher at the high school, as interim head wrestling coach.

Ok now, let us get the rest of the story.

The current superintendent inherited the spot when the board decided to oust the previous super - as she is the daughter of the super before that.

The current super can't be responsible for teachers/coaches soliciting or having a DUI. What they are responsible for is how they respond, so.......

And, this super has a history of saying she will investigate something and respond and then, then, then,....
