CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia State Girls High School Basketball Tournament started Wednesday in the Capital City.

Schools from across the state will be hitting the courts to find out which team is best.

The girls will go first and then the boys.

While the ladies bring the same spirit to the game the stands aren't always as full as they are during the boys basketball games.

But some people we talked to said they are hoping students and communities will cheer on both the men's teams and the women's teams equally!

"We've watched over the years how women's roles have changed in a lot of ways," said Beth Plumley from Summers County. "Hopefully in a few years people will come out to support the girls like the boys."

Some of the people we talked to said the reason the stands might not be as full Wednesday is because the boys regional games are also going on and fans can't be both places at once.
