MORGANTOWN -- The internet search giant Google is looking for a city to test it's new high-speed internet service, and Morgantown wants to be on that list.
The project would bring new broadband connections to Morgantown homes through a direct fiber network. It would allow surfing speeds more than 100 times faster than average broadband connections, at least one Gigabit per second.
"All the residents would be opened up so thousands of new opportunities and services that could be provided on a ultra high band network," said Jeff Mikorski, a city employee who's leading the "We Want a Gig" campaign.
The pilot program application process includes a show of community support, so leaders are encouraging residents to go online to www.WeWantAGig.com and tell Google what they'd do with faster Internet service.
"Google is taking a fiber to the home its like getting a new dial tone for your phone, what could you do with having that additional speed," said Morgantown City Council Member John Gaddis.
The campaign wraps up 15 days, when the application is due to Google.
