Tim Manchin may be gearing up to run against McKinley

Posted: Updated:

Delegate Tim Manchin, D-Marion, may be preparing to join his first cousin U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin in Congress.

Tim Manchin, who was first elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 2004, met with members of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Dec. 19, according to Politico blogger David Catanese. Catanese said Manchin wanted to talk about potential fundraisers and campaign organization for a run against Republican Rep. David McKinley for the first Congressional seat.

Calls to Manchin's office were not returned Tuesday.

Manchin's meeting comes three days after former West Virginia Sen. Mike Oliverio announced he would not seek the Democratic nomination for that seat. Oliverio lost to McKinley in the 2010 general election by 1,440 votes.

Sue Thorn, a local activist, also has filed papers to run in the first Congressional district.
