Son of late Putnam delegate to run for Senate

Posted: Updated:

Putnam County attorney Joshua Martin, son of the late Delegate Dale Martin, D-Putnam, will announce his candidacy for the West Virginia Senate at 11 a.m. Thursday morning.

Martin will run in a newly drawn district that covers northern Putnam and Kanawha counties. That district will include portions of what were Senate Districts 4, 8 and 17. Districts 8 and 17 both covered Kanawha County and overlapped. District 4 includes Putnam, Mason, Jackson and the northwest corner of Roane counties.

Dale Martin died in May at the age of 59. His wife, Helen, was appointed to fill his seat in the House until next year's election.

Dale Martin was first elected to the 13th District in 2000. Along with fellow Democrat Brady Paxton, he represented portions of Mason, Putnam and Jackson counties. At the time of his death, he was serving his sixth consecutive term as a House member.
