Candidates planning to run for public office in the 2012 elections may begin filing candidacy papers on Jan. 9, according to the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office.

The office also will offer a free live video stream every day of the filing period, including up to the midnight deadline on Jan. 28, for people wanting to watch who is filing. The live streaming video will be available on a link that will appear at the top of the Secretary of State's website at www.wvsos.com.

"This is open and engaging government at its best," Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant said in a news release. "Citizens will be able to see who has filed to run for office and get an unfiltered view of how it works. It's going to be an exciting filing period, and I hope people around the state take advantage of this unique opportunity to see what few people have ever seen: the first step of a candidate's official campaign."

This year's election promises to be a big one. Not only is 2012 a presidential election year, but every constitutional office in West Virginia is on the ballot: Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor, Attorney General, and Commissioner of Agriculture. Every seat in the House of Delegates is up for election, as is half of the State Senate. Two seats on the State Supreme Court also will be filled this year, and numerous county and municipal offices are on the ballot, too.

In addition, federal candidates will be running for U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.

"The voters of West Virginia have been asked to go to the polls five times in 17 months, and there are two more statewide elections this year. It is my hope that allowing citizens to see the excitement with which candidates file their paperwork here in the Secretary of State's Office will also inspire them to cast their ballot in the primary and again in the general election," Tennant said.

More than 600 filings are expected to be received by the Secretary of State's Office. Candidates may file their paperwork and pay the filing fee up until midnight on Jan. 28.
