Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin will deliver his second State of the State Address tonight at 7 p.m. to highlight West Virginia's successes over the past year and outline what he hopes lawmakers will accomplish during the next 60 days.
The State of the State is an annual address delivered by West Virginia's governor on the opening day of the Legislature's 60-day regular session. Last year, Tomblin delivered the address as the state's acting governor, a position he ascended to following Joe Manchin's election to the U.S. Senate.
While the text of the speech has not be released yet, the topics expected to be discussed during the speech tonight and during the session include education, Marcellus shale exploration and development, improving health care and fighting substance abuse.
Tomblin also is expected to use his speech to celebrate some successes West Virginia has enjoyed during the past year, including being one of the few states with a budget surplus and landing some high profile business expansions such as the Macy's distribution center currently under construction in the Eastern Panhandle and a new Amazon.com center in Huntington.
The speech will begin at 7 p.m. and likely will last 45 minutes.
