West Virginia Wesleyan announced Jan. 17 the opening of a new wellness center.
Renovation of the 9,000–square foot space in Jenkins Hall, formerly the site of a cafeteria, was designed by Buckhannon architect Bryson Von Nostrand and built by Huffman Construction of Clarksburg.
The center will feature cardio equipment including treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical and rowing machines and steppers. It also features a weight room and an aerobics room as well as televisions, water stations, and locker rooms with showers.
In addition, two multi-purpose rooms will be used to offer wellness programming to the college and community, such as fitness classes or nutrition programs.
"The wellness center is a student-driven project," said Dr. Pamela Balch, president of Wesleyan. "We know that healthy lifestyles are important to students, faculty and staff. Bryson Von Nostrand has done an incredible job of renovating an old useless space into a Wellness Center that is among the best of any small college in our region."
The wellness center is the latest of many construction and renovation projects taking place on Wesleyan's campus in recent years. Since 2009, the college has added the $7.2 million Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts, the $8.9 million David E. Reemsnyder Research Center, a new $5 million residence hall and a $5 million renovation of Fleming Residence Hall, wireless technology and increased bandwidth across the campus, and a $600,000 campus green space with a fountain in front of Wesley Chapel.
