For the first time in years, all members of the West Virginia National Guard are home.

For the past decade, our guardsmen and women have been in harm's way, defending the country and making certain that tyranny and oppression are vanquished by the irrepressible forces of freedom and democracy.

By all accounts, they've done an exemplary job and they deserve some time to rest and relax with family and friends.

Sacrifices are many for those who serve our country. Holidays and family milestones are often missed because of deployment or other commitments. It's a difficult, demanding life, and we owe them a debt of gratitude we can never repay.

We live in the greatest country in the world, and we can enjoy this life because so many are willing to forgo the comforts of home to battle injustice around the globe.

America is a beacon of hope in an often-dark world. Our fighting men and women carry the banner for liberty and, as the song says, "trample out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored."

But we must remain forever vigilant in our fight against those who are against us and what this great nation stands for and represents.
