FAIRMONT, W.Va. (AP) — People looking for jobs in the power industry have a new path.
Pierpont
Community & Technical College and Ohio's FirstEnergy signed an
agreement Tuesday that could lead students to careers as utility line workers or substation electricians.
The curriculum combines hands-on
training through FirstEnergy's Power Systems Institute with Pierpont's
classroom instruction. The two-year program will lead to an associate's
degree.
FirstEnergy's James Haney says the goal is to create a pipeline of well-trained and well-educated workers.
The
program includes course work in electrical fundamentals and circuit
analysis, along with practical skills training and general education
classes.
After their second semester, students get paid for 10 weeks of field experience.
FirstEnergy is the parent of Mon Power and Potomac Edison.
