WV moves to tighten rules for sport concussions

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON — West Virginia lawmakers want to add more teeth to a regulation requiring athletes suspected of suffering a head injury be evaluated immediately by a health professional.

The Senate Education Committee advanced the bill Jan. 31 but it must still clear another committee before it could go to the full Senate for a vote.

Legislators want the Secondary School Activities Commission to draft additional regulations that would prevent athletes from returning to a game or practice unless the health professional clears the athlete to play. The bill would also require the commission to provide guidelines and forums for coaches, parents and students about the risk and nature of concussions.

Parents and student athletes would also have to sign a concussion information sheet each year before the student could practice or compete.
