Analysis finds WV nursing homes receive low rankings

Posted: Updated:

Six nursing homes in West Virginia were among the more than 500 found in a USA Today analysis to have consistently received the lowest federal rating since the government started ratings in late 2008.

"More than 560 of the nation's nursing homes have not budged for the past years from a one-star federal government rating," reads a story from USA Today's Feb. 10 edition about its analysis of the federal data.

The West Virginia nursing homes listed in the article are were Oak Ridge Center in Charleston, Boone Health Care Center in Danville, Pierpont Center at Fairmont Campus in Fairmont, Arbors at Fairmont in Fairmont, Teays Valley Center in Hurricane and Cedar Ridge Center in Sissonville.

Among the consistently low performers, almost 2/3 were for-profit nursing homes owned by chains.

When the ratings were introduced in 2008, the nursing home industry criticized the methods used as simplistic and unfair, according to USA Today. Consumer advocates pointed out in the article that the quality of a nursing home can quickly change.

The federal government contracts with states to inspect nursing homes about once a year, gleaning information from annual inspections, quality measures and staff time spent with residents.
