CHARLESTON (AP) — A free statewide event has helped more than 1,000 students apply for federal college financial aid.

The third annual College Goal Sunday was held Sunday at 19 locations across West Virginia.

Students and their families received free assistance from financial aid experts in completing federal student aid paperwork.

State College Goal Sunday chairwoman Angie Holley says the event helps remove some of the logistic obstacles to attending college.

The Higher Education Policy Commission coordinates the event in conjunction with the West Virginia Association of Financial Aid Administrators and the YMCA.
