MORGANTOWN -

Mark Brazaitis, the director of West Virginia University's Creative Writing Program, recently won the Richard Sullivan Prize, which is given biennially to a collection of short stories.

Brazaitis, an associate professor in the Department of English, won for his third collection of short stories, "The Incurables," which will be published by the University of Notre Dame Press later this year. Most of the stories in "The Incurables" are about the effects of mental illness on characters in a small Ohio town.

The prize from the University of Notre Dame's Creative Writing Program includes $1,000 and a reading at the University of Notre Dame in 2013.

West Virginia University professors Jim Anderson and Dan Panaccione have been named Davis-Michael Professors in the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design.

Professorships were endowed for each Davis' five academic divisions as part of a $16.2 million bequest made to the college by Morgantown sisters Gladys Davis and Vivian Davis Michael in September 2001.

Anderson, a professor of wildlife and ecology management, will hold the professorship for the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources while Panaccione, a professor of mycology and genetics, will hold the professorship for the Division of Plant and Soil Sciences.

Since joining WVU's faculty in 1999, Anderson has been awarded more than $11.2 million in grants and contracts.

Panaccione, who joined WVU's faculty in 1992, is described by colleagues in the Division of Plant and Soil Sciences as "the go-to person" for counsel on numerous biological issues.
