The West Virginia Republican Party has named its nominee for the race for Agriculture Commissioner.

Mike Teets dropped out of the race for agriculture commissioner after Walt Helmick, D-Pocahontas, announced his intentions to run.

"We were approached by numerous terrific candidates for appointment of Agriculture Commissioner," Mike Stuart, chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party, said in a news release.

Stuart said in the release that Leonhardt lives in Monongalia County, is a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps and is a working farmer raising cows, sheep and goats on a farm that had been abandoned in 1957.

Leonhardt is a member of the West Virginia Farm Bureau and has a degree in wildlife management and a master's degree in business management.
