West Virginia Wesleyan is hosting an
internationally curated photography exhibition, "Spinning Yarns: Photographic
Storytelling." The exhibition sponsored by Kendall College of Art & Design
of Ferris University and Monmouth University and includes photography by
Wesleyan's own assistant professor Andy Bloxham.
The exhibit opens
to the public Sept. 4 with a reception from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Sleeth
Gallery, located on the first floor of McCuskey Hall. An exhibition talk will
immediately follow.
The Sleeth
Gallery is open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays or by appointment.
Spinning Yarns
was curated by Anne Leighton Massoni and Libby Rowe. In addition to Bloxham's
work, the show features the photographic works of 22 other national and
international artists.
Photographs in
the exhibit are imbued with a variety of narrative elements, such as ‘setting
the stage' or introducing characters, inviting the viewer to personally add to
or expand the narratives based on their own experiences. The photographs
present an active — rather than passive — method of weaving together the
original intent of the photographers with the personal perspectives of the
audience.
"The Sleeth
Gallery provides a great and free cultural service to the department, college
and local community," said Phil McCollam, Sleeth Gallery director. "The gallery
acts as an educational and community-building space, in which students and
members of the community can engage with the university and with artists, both
local and national."
