The deadline to nominate a West Virginia high school senior for the EQT Students of Excellence scholarship is quickly approaching.

The scholarship program is funded through EQT Corp. It provides $1,000 to one student in each of West Virginia's 55 counties. In addition, three students in the state will be eligible for full-ride scholarships for up to four years worth $18,000 per year.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, Sept. 24.

To be eligible for the larger scholarships, students must be working on and maintaining progress toward a degree in one of the following majors — computer science or information technology; engineering – petroleum, civil or chemical; energy or land management; environmental science; geology; or safety science.

"The State Journal is very grateful to EQT Corp. and the EQT Foundation for their continued support of this scholarship," said Beth Gorczyca Ryan, managing editor of The State Journal. "This scholarship truly is helping to change West Virginia high schoolers' lives and helping Mountain State families afford college."

The program is open to all high school seniors who reside in West Virginia and are enrolled in a public or private school or receive their education through a home school setting.

EQT has several offices across West Virginia. An integrated energy company with emphasis on Appalachian area natural gas production, gathering, transmission, and distribution, EQT has sponsored the Students of Excellence Scholarship program for four years.

"This is a great opportunity for any West Virginia high school senior, and we hope teachers, guidance counselors, friends, family members or other people take a few moments to nominate students they know," Ryan said. "One student from every county is guaranteed to receive at least  $1,000 scholarship, so this is a great opportunity people shouldn't pass up."
