A Bayer vice president has been selected to be the next president and chief executive officer of the South Charleston-based Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research & Innovation Center Inc., also known as MATRIC.

Steven B. Hedrick will take over the helm of MATRIC, a nonprofit that started in 2004 to expand research and development in the state and create spin-off businesses, effective Feb. 1. He succeeds Keith Pauley, who resigned earlier this year to work in China.

According to a news release from MATRIC, Hedrick has an extensive background in the chemical industry, most recently as vice president and head of Bayer CropScience's Institute Industrial Park. Prior to that, Hedrick served in various positions with Bayer MaterialScience and Lyondell.

"Steve brings a proven record of successful leadership in large and complex environments. We are convinced he is uniquely positioned to lead us into the future," said MATRIC board of directors Chairman Paul Arbogast.

Hedrick currently serves on the board of directors for several organizations, including the West Virginia Manufacturers Association, Charleston Area Alliance, Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce and Kanawha County Metro-911. He is immediate past chairman of the WVMA's Chemical Industry Committee, which serves as West Virginia's Chemical Industry Council.

Hedrick, who is a native of West Virginia, served as an officer in the U.S. Army, and he earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Pauley, who helped to found MATRIC nearly 10 years ago, left the organization earlier this year to take a similar job with an organization in China. Since his departure, Greg Clutter, MATRIC's chief operating officer, has served as the in interim president and CEO.

"Greg has done all that has been asked of him and more," noted Arbogast. "We greatly appreciated his ability to manage throughout this juncture and we are delighted he is continuing as COO."

MATRIC is a nonprofit corporation that conducts market-driven research and development in the chemical, environmental and advanced software technology industries. MATRIC has more than100 employees in West Virginia, including world-class scientists, management and staff that serve customers domestically and internationally.
