WV DEP Presents Environmental Awards of Excellence

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection presented 21 Environmental Excellence Awards at a ceremony at the DEP headquarters in Charleston on Wednesday, May 28.

The annual event was held to recognize state industries, municipalities, educators and community leaders who have demonstrated exemplary environmental performance and practice environmental stewardship. “(The award winners) work hard to lessen their impact on the environment and strive to educate others about preserving our natural resources,” said DEP Cabinet Secretary Randy Huffman.

These facilities were nominated by various DEP inspectors who work to ensure their compliance with the law.

The 2014 honorees were:
  • Clean Energy  IGS CNG Services
  • Sewage Treatment Plant Greater Than 400,000 GDP  Bluefield-Ada Wastewater Treatment Plant; and City of Beckley Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • Industry Less Than 100 Employees – Leslie Equipment
  • Industry Greater Than 100 Employees – Weyerhaeuser Co.
  • Municipal Landfill – Raleigh County Landfill-Raleigh County SWA
  • Education and Community Involvement – The Highland School Hawks; Mark Bollinger, National Park Service; Davis Creek Watershed Association; and Girl Scouts Black Diamond Council
  • Safe Dams  WVDNR-Berwind Lake Dam
  • Environmental Partnership – West Virginia Recycling Services; and Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority
  • Volunteers of the Year – Col. Rowan Post 2345 VFW and Auxiliary
  • Outstanding Litter Control Officer  Jimmy Stone - Raleigh County SWA; and James Miller - Wyoming County SWA
  • Environmental Stewardship – Friends of the Hughes River Watershed Association; Braxton County SWA-Town of Sutton; Raleigh County SWA-Recycling and Education Center; and Wyoming County Solid Waste Authority
  • Cabinet Secretary Award – Morris Creek Watershed Association
